A Conservative Alternative to Crowns
Inlays and onlays—sometimes called partial crowns—are custom-made restorations used to repair moderate decay or damage on the chewing surfaces of molars or premolars. They’re designed to fit precisely into or over the affected area, preserving healthy enamel while restoring strength, function, and aesthetics.
At Black Mountain Dental, we use high-quality porcelain or ceramic materials, and our digital technology allows for precise, efficient treatment—sometimes even in a single visit, depending on the case.
What's the Difference Between Inlays and Onlays?
- Inlays fit inside the grooves of a tooth (within the cusps), like a very strong, custom filling.
- Onlays cover one or more of the cusps (points) of the tooth, offering more extensive coverage.
Both types are more durable and longer-lasting than traditional dental fillings, especially in areas that take a lot of chewing pressure.
When Are Inlays or Onlays Recommended?
Dr. Ghim may recommend an inlay or onlay if:
- You have a large cavity or damaged area that’s too big for a filling
- Your tooth is cracked or worn but doesn’t require a full dental crown
- You want a longer-lasting, more aesthetic alternative to metal fillings
- You want to preserve as much of your natural tooth structure as possible
These restorations are an excellent middle ground between fillings and crowns—stronger than a filling, more conservative than a crown.
