OK – so no one looks forward to a root canal. But did you ever ask yourself why this dental procedure is so maligned? It’s probably because – back in the day – root canals weren’t comfortable. Dentistry has come a long way since then. Now, modern tools and techniques have taken the fear factor out of root canal therapy. At Black Mountain Dental, Henderson NV dentist Dr. Heeyup Ghim and our staff go the extra smile to deliver a safe, positive experience.
Reasons for a Root Canal
Dr. Ghim delivers conservative dental care, which means that he won’t recommend unnecessary procedures. He’ll only propose the treatments that he feels are in your best interest. A root canal can be a conservative treatment option to preserve a tooth. Dr. Ghim performs root canals on teeth that have suffered damage to the innermost chamber, where the pulp resides.
Internal damage to a tooth can be caused by extensive decay, trauma, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, or a fracture. The compromised area of a tooth can serve as an entrance for bacteria to invade. When infection occurs in the pulp, the tooth can become abscessed and may die.
The Root Canal Process
A root canal performed on a tooth in the early stages of infection can save the tooth from extraction. Dr. Ghim removes the infected tissue from the internal chambers of the tooth, fills the canals with biocompatible filler, and then seals the tooth with a custom crown. The damage is resolved, and the tooth is restored.
Waiting too long to address an internally damaged tooth can leave you with only one option: extraction and replacement with a prosthetic. A root canal preserves a damaged tooth and renews dental form, function, and comfort.
