Common Causes of Tooth Pain

ToothPain2When your tooth hurts, you likely care more about getting relief than about the underlying cause. We understand. But did you know that toothaches can stem from causes unrelated to your smile? Henderson NV dentist Dr. Heeyup Ghim and the team at Black Mountain Dental deliver comprehensive care to stop tooth pain and restore oral health and comfort. Here, we discuss common causes of tooth pain.

Dental-Related Reasons Your Tooth Hurts

It makes sense that a toothache would be caused by a dental-related issue. Many times, that’s the case. The top dental causes for tooth pain include cavities, damage to a tooth, gum disease, and abscess.

  • A cavity is a hole in a tooth caused by bacteria and plaque acids. When the protective enamel of a tooth is breached, pain and sensitivity can occur.
  • A chipped or cracked tooth (or a broken crown or filling) can expose the sensitive tooth root and cause discomfort.
  • Gum disease, especially in the more advanced stages, loosens the bonds that hold teeth in place, causing pain in the mouth.

An abscess occurs when the nerve and pulp inside a tooth becomes infected. An abscess can result in pain and pressure.

Non-Dental-Related Reasons for Tooth Pain

Many people don’t know that tooth pain can have its origin in conditions outside the mouth. These include sinus infections, headaches, heart attack, and even vitamin deficiency.

  • A sinus infection causes the sinuses to swell. This swelling in the sinuses that reside in the lower part of the face, above the jaw, can put pressure on teeth and make it seem as if you have a toothache.
  • Although the exact reason is unknown, cluster headaches have been lined to toothache-like pain.
  • Viruses such as shingles can cause tooth discomfort.
  • During a heart attack, pain may be felt in the lower jaw.
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency has been known to cause pain that mimics a toothache.
